Toil and gloom
Who does not have doubts from time to time, or experience sorrow?
Toil takes a lot from your mental health, and perhaps your physical energy. Gloom takes your down even more. It takes a lot of mental strength to get out of that.
The hymn “Thro’ the night of doubt and sorrow” describes the whole scene of all that negative situations we sometimes find ourselves in. For each, the hymn reminds us we must hang on to God: he provides, he helps us to bear the situation, he takes us out to time and place of relieve. He is our God.
What might be a surprise to many is that this hymn appears in multiple forms: notably two groupings of stanzas and variants in the lyrics, and a variety of tunes. Some convey more of the distress felt, but most of the tunes are more positive.
